In a recent development, the Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has announced the extension of Barapullah corridor under Phase 4 of the project. With this extension, the PWD will be connecting the INA market to the Army Hospital in the Delhi Cantonment area.

As per the plan, the whole extension will be elevated and it will be 7 km long. The work on the phase-3 of the Barapullah project is about to end soon after which the PWD will commence work on the Phase-4.

Giving more details on the above extension, a senior PWD official said, “Under the Phase-4 of the Barapullah corridor expansion project, the department has planned to connect INA market with the Army Hospital in the Delhi Cantonment area on NH-8,”

At present, due to heavy traffic, daily commuters traveling to the Airport and Gurgaon have to face congestion. Once the elevated corridor will be developed, the traveling time to the IGI Airport will be reduced to a mere 40 minutes.

The senior official further informed that of the 7 km elevated route, 4.5 km will run along with Sarojini Nagar, Chanakyapuri, and Safdarjung Railway stations, while the remaining 2.5 km will pass through Dhaula Kuan and Sardarjung Airport before reaching Army Hospital.

“The elevated flyway will have 4 entry and exit points. Apart from this, the PWD has proposed to develop a separate cycle track as well as a foot over bridges on the new corridor so as to avoid any kind of congestion due to pedestrian traffic,” added Official.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 300 crore approximately and the deadline to complete the project is 2021. Once the extension will start its operations around 34000 vehicles will be diverted to this route.
